Poles elect new parliament

Parliamentary elections have started in Poland. This Sunday, 29 million voters have been called to vote on the distribution of 460 seats in the Sejm and 100 seats in the Senate, the less important second house of parliament. The first predictions are expected to be made after the polls close at 21:00.

According to polls, the national conservative ruling party, Law and Justice (PiS), will likely remain the strongest force but will miss out on an absolute majority. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki will need to rely on the far-right Konfederacja to form a government. They refused to form a coalition with PiS in the election campaign.

Polls show former Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s liberal-conservative Citizens’ Coalition (KO) in second place, just behind PiS. If he wins the election, he could form a coalition with the left-wing Lewica alliance and the Christian-conservative Third Way. However, the prerequisite for this is that the Third Way, as a merger of the two parties, must overcome the eight percent barrier that applies to such electoral alliances in Poland.
