The closure of Seenstraße from the southern city exit at Völkermarkt until December 22 caused excitement among business people in the main square when they learned of the construction site two weeks ago. “We are on the sidelines at the moment, and the Christmas business in particular is a major component of our shopping, accounting for up to 50 percent of annual sales,” says Wilfried Magnet angrily from the Magnet gallery and bookstore on the main square. He strongly criticizes society’s lack of prior knowledge. He and jeweler Daniel Winkler suggest that at least cars should be allowed to drive in one lane from Kühnsdorf to the main square. “The landslide on Diexer Landesstraße was much larger and was completely closed for only one week; the rest of the time, one lane was open,” explains Winkler.
