At least five people died in Russia’s attack on Ukraine

Russia once again launched heavy air strikes on Ukraine, particularly Kiev, on Tuesday. According to officials, 5 people lost their lives in the capital and its surroundings, as well as in Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine. The Russian army launched nearly a hundred rockets. According to Russian sources, Ukraine responded with rocket attacks on the Russian border region of Belgorod, where one person died.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov accused Moscow of deliberately targeting civilian residential areas. However, the Kremlin said the attacks targeted military facilities. All intended targets were “destroyed”.

According to officials, a residential building was hit and a fire broke out in an area near the center of Kiev. Two people died and dozens were injured. According to local authorities, two more people died in attacks in the Kiev region and a 91-year-old woman was killed in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv.

According to information from Ukraine, Russia fired a total of “99 rockets of various types” during the wave of attacks on Tuesday morning. The Ukrainian military said 72 of them were shot down by air defenses. The massive wave of Russian attacks was launched by approximately 35 drones, all of which were shot down.

The attacks also caused serious damage to the power grid in Kiev and the surrounding area, according to state energy supplier Ukrenergo. Because of this, more than 250,000 people were left without electricity.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said that at least 92 people were injured in Russia’s attacks. He spoke of renewed “Russian terrorism” and also thanked Western allies for providing air defense systems. “These help save hundreds of lives every day and every night.”

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba called on Kiev’s allies to deliver weapons faster. Kuleba said the West must respond “decisively” to new Russian attacks. First of all, “additional air defense systems and combat aircraft of all types” would have to be delivered. The Ukrainian army also needs more “missiles with a range of more than 300 kilometers.”

There are great fears that the war between Russia and Ukraine may escalate and involve NATO. After a Russian missile briefly entered Polish airspace last Friday, Poland again sent warplanes to the border region with Ukraine on Tuesday. The Polish military said “two pairs of F-16 jets and one allied tanker aircraft” were deployed to protect Polish airspace.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Monday that he will step up attacks against military targets in Ukraine in response to Kiev’s attack on the Russian city of Belgorod. According to authorities, 25 people died in the attack in Belgorod on Saturday.

According to information provided by Russia, a new attack was carried out in the Belgorod region on Tuesday. Moscow’s Defense Ministry said all Ukrainian missiles were destroyed. Border region governor Vyacheslav Gladkov later reported that one person was killed and five were injured.

The Russian Ministry of Defense also announced that Russian troops “accidentally” bombed their own village, about 150 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. However, only buildings were damaged.
