The nomination of Ryan Kiera Armstrong for “Firestarter” has sparked controversy on social networks.
When the nominees for the next edition of the Razzie Awards were announced last Monday, it was not only revealed that Blond would compete in various categories and Tom Hanks could win two golden raspberries, but it was also established that Ryan Kiera Armstrong would contest the Worst Actress category.
But although this infamous category has other nominees such as Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic Park: Dominion), Diane Keaton (Mack and Rita), Kaya Scodelario (The King’s Daughter) and Alicia Silverstone (The shark), Armstrong’s nomination quickly sparked outrage on social media. After all, beyond the impressions that everyone can have of the new film based on fire starter by Stephen King and the performance of the young actress in her, via Twitter, several users claimed the nomination of a girl for the awards of the worst cinema.
Take Julian Hilliard, who you might remember as Billy from Wanda Visionhe pointed: “Razzies are already mean and classless, but naming a girl is just plain disgusting and wrong. Why put a girl at risk for more bullying or worse? Be better.”
Meanwhile, another user pointed out: “I don’t know, it seems a little crazy to me to nominate a 12-year-old girl for Worst Actress, but I guess that’s how the Razzies do it.”
“Okay. If you’re under 18, you should be banned from Razzies. I never blame the child for a performance, I blame the adults who said yes.” This was part of what another tweeter indicated.
“A 12-year-old actress is nominated for a Razzie award? What is that ? This world is broken. It really is. Cancel this appointment. Please don’t put that kind of pressure on a child.”
“I have friends who were child actors and knowing the hardships they went through, it’s NOT cool that the Razzies nominated a 12-year-old actress (who was awesome in the movie by the way).”
“The Razzies feel anachronistically meaner every year. You know exactly the guys who still bother to organize something like this in 2023.”
“I just heard the Razzies nominated an 11-year-old girl. And I thought I couldn’t hate this organization of sarcastic assholes anymore.”
“The Razzies are the scum of the movie world. I spoke to Ryan Keira Armstrong on the Firestarter promo; she was thrilled to hear me say how wonderful her performance was (and she really is). It must be devastating for any new artist.”
“The Razzies primarily focus on female performances and have now nominated a 12-year-old girl for her performance on Firestarter. It’s really not great.”
“The Razzies nomination for *literally a 12 year old girl* reminded me of that interview in Alex Winter’s fantastic documentary, Showbiz Kids, where Milla Jovovich talks about what it was like to read brutal reviews about her acting. ‘child.”
“The Razzies hit a new low point by nominating an eleven-year-old girl whose performance I really liked. If you keep bashing people’s hard work, which you shouldn’t, at least target the adults. “
Despite the criticism the nomination drew from 12-year-old Ryan Kiera Armstrong, whose previous Firestarter credits include Anne with an E, Tomorrow War and Black Widow; she is not the first child to be nominated for the Razzie Awards and, for example, in 1999 Jake Lloyd was nominated for Worst Supporting Actor for his role in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace when I was only 10 years old.
As of this writing, Razzie Awards officials have not responded to these criticisms.
