The director regretted that due to the number of previous nominees, the 2008 film was not considered at the time.

This year, among the nominees for the next edition of the Oscars, two films can be qualified as blockbusters: Avatar: The Way of the Watera band that recently outmoded the $2 billion fundraising barrier, and Top Gun: Maverickone of the productions that has brought in the most money since the start of the pandemic.

But while these considerations can be taken as an indicator that popularity shouldn’t influence a movie’s quality, Steven Spielberg still regrets that another blockbuster wasn’t nominated long ago.

During a conversation with Deadline about Oscar nominations, Spielberg said that in his opinion, currently Black Knight it would have been nominated for the Best Picture category with no problem.

The Dark Knight was among the films eligible for statuettes at the 81st Academy Awards held in 2009. However, it was not nominated in the Best Picture category, which at the time consisted of only five titles and was finally won Slumdog Millionaire.

“I’m really encouraged by that,” Spielberg pointed out when asked about the nominations for the sequels of Avatar Yes Top Gun. “He was late for the movie that should have been nominated years ago, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. This movie would definitely have gotten a Best Picture nomination today, so to have these two blockbusters solidly featured on the Top 10 list is something we should all celebrate.”

Spielberg is also up for Best Picture as his most recent film, The Fabelmanswill also compete in the division which also includes Everything everywhere all at once Yes In the west, nothing is new, among others. And while The Dark Knight couldn’t even be nominated for best picture in 2009, the film still won two statuettes: the posthumous Oscar for best actor in a supporting role for Heath Ledger and the prize for best sound editing.
