Sofia Boutella hits back and defends Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon against critics

In a recent interview, the star of Rebel Moon – Part 1: The Fire Girl, Sofia Boutellaspoke about the challenging experience of seeing the film face harsh criticism upon its release on Netflix.

The film, a passion project of the director Zack Snyderis a two-part space adventure featuring Boutella as a former soldier who rallies warriors to defend her farming colony against the oppressive Empire.

Despite his dedication to the project, the first part of Rebel Moon has received negative reviews, currently holding a 21% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Boutella expressed his disappointment, stating the following in an interview with Vulture: “I always thought I was fully armed to take these punches, and then I read the reviews that came out on ‘Rebel Moon’ and it really affected me.“.

I’ll be honest about this. I feel like I’m carrying this for everyone who cared so much about this project, and that’s what affected me. Not the way I look. I was very lucky and people liked my work, but the film was criticized“.

Despite the criticism, Boutella remains proud of her involvement in Rebel Moon, stating: “It really affected me for all those who put so much heart, tears and sweat into this project“.

It’s hard to see anything being demolished to this extent. I’m proud to have been a part of it, and if there’s no more Rebel Moon, it will be a very important part of my life that I will forever defend“.

Still in the interview, Boutella reflected on her role as Kora in the film and highlighted her efforts to bring depth and vulnerability to the character, even going beyond what was written.

She praised Snyder for allowing her the creative freedom to explore Kora’s complex emotions, stating: “The beauty of working with Zack is that he allowed me to go above and beyond.”

Originally Rebel Moon was conceived as a Star Wars-style story, it was criticized for being too generic by several critics.

Rebel Moon – Part 2: The Scar Marker is scheduled to arrive at Netflix on April 19th. The film will still have a director’s cut, but there is no release date yet.
