They develop the first pregnancy test that works with saliva

The most common method to find out if a woman is pregnant is through a test that works with urine. However, Israeli scientists have developed a pregnancy test capable of reacting to urine.

The test in question is called ‘SaliStick’ and has been developed by a company specialized in diagnostics from saliva. According to its developers, it has an effectiveness of 95%which would make it somewhat less reliable than other brands of pregnancy tests that work through urine and that have an accuracy of 99%.

The operation is similar to that of a coronavirus detection test. The woman must put the stick at the end of her mouth for a few moments, then it is inserted into a tube along with a reagent and the result is obtained in less than 10 minutes.

According to the developer company, saliva can be another method for detecting pregnancies since this fluid contains more than 5,000 proteins identified. In addition, they explain on their website that “it allows an accessible, non-invasive, safe and simple user experience.”

Pregnancy tests use urine or blood

Guy Krief, co-founder of the invention, assures in the ‘Daily Mail’ that they have data that 70% of women would be willing to use this method to find out if they are pregnant. As for the precision, although it is still below other methods and is capable of detecting pregnancy on the first day of delay of the period.

As specified, each year about 840 million pregnancy tests and all use urine or blood as a detection fluid. Specifically, what this detects saliva test is the pregnancy hormone β-hCG. They assure that its potential is that it is a low-cost, new and improved test.
