Nine months earlier, the national team had finished second at the World Championships, but in retrospect there is no real explanation for this feat in Japan and South Korea. At the European Championships before (2000 in Holland/Belgium) and after (2004 in Portugal), the Germans dropped out miserably and prematurely. Then, as now: a domestic crisis.

The future of German football

Jamal Musiala And Florian WirtzBoth 20 years old and brilliant attacking midfielders, they belong to the future of German football. This can be seen and felt by everyone who knows the Bundesliga and cannot name an alternative to it. But: is the present ripe for the future? One plays for Bayern Munich and has already collected a number of trophies (exactly ten), the other plays for Bayer Leverkusen and therefore was only able to win titles in the youth B team and the German U21 national team.

Between them they have scored two goals in 35 international appearances, which doesn’t sound promising for the front line. Until now, there was always a question of “either/or” between them in the national team. As they spun the flywheel together against Germany for the first time in a 3-1 win over the USA, it became a both/and. This is the bravest decision of national coaches. Julian Nagelsmann met until now: Nowhere else does he dare to experiment; his team averages just under 30 years old.

Young people just out of adolescence are often said to be carefree. A term designed to hide the fact that the next generation is considered naive and not very receptive to the meaning of a big football match. This is nonsense, of course. No coach beats around the bush when something big is about to happen; When it comes to football, pup defense exists only in media reviews. It depends more on us how quickly we get used to the new double name Musiala-Wirtz.

Victory over the USA

The abundance of through passes, speed runs and dribbling in the 3-1 win over the USA was largely driven by the attacking midfield, where Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz either started their moves or created space for their colleagues. They constantly caused unrest, which at one point unsettled the Americans and led to the winning goals for the Germans. It’s not certain that this synergy will always work, especially against the more tactically astute Mexicans on Tuesday. But it’s not that.

The national team got a new start not only from Julian Nagelsmann on the coaching bench, but also from the young stars on the field. Musiala & Wirtz: It feels like Black & Decker craftsmanship and influence, and we’re okay with that. Constant fine-tuning with changes in personnel, as practiced by predecessor Hansi Flick, led nowhere. No one knew what the other was doing. This is perhaps the most important takeaway from the US game: let’s do it with Musiala & Wirtz.
