“The team is really fun. I think they showed some of the qualities that we have behind us. It’s really nice to watch,” said the 41-year-old from Bundesliga club Stuttgart. “On Saturday at 13:00 I will definitely be sitting in front of the TV,” he said before the final against France. VfB will face Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga on Saturday evening.

According to Hoeneß, the team had a “difficult path” to the final and “very strong nerves” in the semi-finals. Immediately after training on Tuesday, he joined a small group of VfB professionals who were watching the semi-final penalty shootout against Argentina on their mobile phones.

“Then we let out a little cry of joy together,” Hoeneß said. VfB defender Maximilian Herwert is part of the World Cup squad and made several substitute appearances during the tournament.
