The first big snow plunges Austria into chaos. But while it’s still snowing, it’s best to start thinking about when to clear the snow from your car. A little tip: Don’t wait too long.

Wet snow can become heavy as concrete

Especially in those regions where the snow falls in wet form, you should hurry to shovel the cars. Because when the temperatures drop the next day, the snow becomes as hard as a pimple and the car can only be cleared of snow again by using an ice pick.

The weight of snow should not be underestimated. While dry powder snow weighs just 30 to 50 kilograms per cubic meter, wet fresh snow can weigh up to 200 kilograms per cubic meter.

Penalties of up to 5000 euros

Clearing the car is also mandatory for anyone who wants to drive around again after heavy snowfall. But there are also a few things to consider. Many people focus exclusively on the windshield and forget about the windows, rear window and roof.

“You not only have to clear the windshield, but also all other windows and the roof of the car from snow and ice so that there is sufficient visibility. Anyone who does not adhere to this risks a fine of up to 5,000 euros,” Salzburg ÖAMTC director Martina Schlegel-Lanz is quoted in the “Salzburger Nachrichten”.
