Europa League draws, with Roma and Milan

The UEFA Europa League play-off draws are scheduled for today, Monday 18 December, from 1 p.m. (one hour after the Champions League draws). They will establish the play-off matches – the former round of 16 – which will be contested by the finalists of the group stage of the second European football tournament against the “relegated” teams from the Champions League. Three Italian teams are taking part in the tournament, but Atalanta are already assured of a place in the round of 16 after finishing their group in first place. Roma and Milan will instead have to go through the play-offs first: one qualified second, the other finished third in their Champions League group.

How draws work

A total of sixteen teams will be drawn, divided between the eight “seeded” teams (second in the Europa League groups) and the eight “unseeded” teams (relegated from the Champions League). Each playoff series will consist of one seed and one non-seed. During this round, it will not yet be possible to draw two teams from the same country in the same match.

The sixteen teams

The teams ranked second in the Europa League groups are Fribourg, Marseille, Qarabag, Rennes, Rome, Sparta Prague, Sporting Lisbon and Toulouse. The third-placed teams in the Champions League groups are Benfica, Sporting Braga, Feyenoord, Galatasaray, Lens, MilanShakhtar Donetsk and Young Boys Bern.
