Combined athlete Walcher wins gold at the Junior World Championships in Planica

Styrian Paul Walcher became the junior world champion in the Scandinavian combined event. The 18-year-old player from Ramsa won the gold medal in Planica on Friday with a strong jump ahead of Germany’s Tristan Sommerfeldt (+16.8 seconds) and Norway’s Jens Dahlseide Kvamme (+19.5). In the 10-kilometer cross-country skiing, Jonas Fischbacher (+35.4) ranked fifth, and Andreas Gfrerer (+45.2), who was in second place, took seventh place and passed the medal table.

“It was a perfect day, I couldn’t have imagined anything better,” said Walcher, who entered the track with a comfortable 42-second lead after the 92.5m jump. “The jump was flawless and I started with a lead. It couldn’t have gone better.” Last year Walcher won the bronze medal.
