Too much fresh snow again hinders Super-G in Val di Fassa

Again due to the abundance of fresh snow and piste conditions, the organizers and the World Ski and Snowboard Union FIS have decided to cancel the second Women’s Ski World Cup Super-G in Val di Fassa. Racing was not possible in the Dolomites on Saturday. In this discipline, there is now another race in the program in Kvitfjell and the final in Saalbach-Hinterglemm. The speed women have already lost six events this winter.

The cancellation also came as a surprise for ÖSV head coach Roland Assinger, as things looked very good on Saturday from Sunday. “During the night another twenty or thirty centimeters were added. The track staff worked hard but the track was no longer working. There were bumps in the corners, so there was no chance of a fair race.” There was also a lot of snow on the edges of the track and safety was not 100% guaranteed.

Small ball is still hotly debated in Super-G; Styrian Cornelia Hütter is in second place, just five points behind Switzerland’s Lara Gut-Behrami. Stephanie Venier is 94 points behind. “The starting situation is the same as two days ago, we are that much further behind but certainly within striking distance. Everything looks set to come to a head in Hinterglemm. I hope there will be plenty of spectators to cheer.” “To our women. So we can have a really great final,” Assinger said. In Super-G and descent you are in a wait-and-see position, you can only win. “This is called a full attack.”

The Alpine Ski World Cup season has been a challenging affair at times. The women’s two downhill races in Zermatt/Cervinia, St. A Super-G race in St. Moritz and a downhill and a Super-G race in Garmisch-Partenkirchen were also canceled earlier. Only one Super-G was added in Zauchensee.

Departure to Norway will take place on Tuesday. ÖSV plans training on Wednesday and the first official downhill training is planned in Kvitfjell on Thursday. Downhill running and Super-G are planned. “We are looking forward to and hoping for good racing,” Assinger said. The weather is good right now.
