The 28-year-old athlete could only admit defeat to local heroine Krista Parmakoski in the 20-kilometer classic technique race. Karl was only 1.9 seconds behind the winner. Finn Kerttu Niskanen took third place.

This was Karl’s fifth personal podium this winter. The Thuringian, who sensationally won the gold medal with Katharina Hennig in the team sprint at the last Olympic Games, has established herself among the absolute best in the world.

This time Hennig had nothing to do with the fight for prizes. On Friday, the 27-year-old finished third alongside Laura Himmler in a thrilling team sprint.
