Record national player Lothar Matthäus has invited club icon Hermann Gerland as a possible interim coach for Bayern should he part ways with Thomas Tuchel before the end of the season. Gerland is a “catcher of men” and knows “what makes Bayern Munich tick,” the former Bayern captain said on football talk show Sky90: “What is he doing? He has to bring the team together as a unit because they know how to play football.”

Former Bundesliga coach Christoph Daum called it a “huge offer” from Matthäus, and also raved about the long-time assistant and young Bayern coach: “He has all the qualities that a Bayern coach needs.”

“If you don’t understand each other, you are no longer for each other.”

Lothar Matthäus on Thomas Tuchel’s relationship with his players

Tuchel, who will still be coaching Germany’s record champions for the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie against Rome’s Lazio, probably won’t be able to stay until the end of the season, Matthäus said. “The risk is great. They don’t understand each other, and if you don’t understand each other, you don’t exist for each other anymore.”

Thomas Tuchel’s departure from Bayern Munich at the end of the 2023/24 season has been confirmed. But the 50-year-old footballer is unlikely to be able to hold on to his coaching position at the beginning of March 2024.

Matthaus criticized Tuchel’s behavior after announcing an early separation at the end of the season. The 62-year-old footballer said that after weak games, like on March 1 with Freiburg (2:2), he will only point the finger at the team: “He belittles the players, but does not try to make mistakes in himself in order to search.” Tuchel makes “many ditches” for itself.

Christoph Daum: Bayern is a patchwork family

Daum generally lacks cohesion at Bayern. “There’s no more unity,” said the 70-year-old. “To me it gives the impression of a patchwork family where things are thrown together, which sometimes seems more random to me.” (dpa/how)
