What is the origin of the “public crying” that they installed in the middle of Alameda?

It is a “public cry”, an initiative that aims to be a refuge for people who need to express their tears before returning home.

The cabin corresponds to an identical replica of the base of the Andrés Bello monument, located near the Central House of University of Chile . Today, the works are located next to each other.

The origin of “public crying”

The crying cabin installed in the center of Santiago corresponds to an artistic proposal by Ángela Ramírez Sanz , visual artist from the University of Chile and the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. It was manufactured by the Exfibro company, which used fiberglass in the manufacturing process.

Ramírez’s intervention began to take shape in 2021 in a rather accidental way. As she walked like any other day, the artist observed that in one corner there was “a Peruvian woman crying bitterly,” she said in an interview at the University of Chile.

“She was crying so much that I approached her to ask if I could do something for her,” added the author of the work. Faced with this question, the woman simply told him “I just need to cry.” . It was not possible for him to do this at home, as his family was waiting for him there.

From this episode, Ramírez asked herself the following question: “Where do tired and depressed bodies cry? . This woman who cried inconsolably showed that she had no refuge to express her emotions, not even at home.

“I felt impertinent interrupting him, but public space exposes us through others,” the artist said.

This is how his initiative began to be born. “The idea of ​​this work is to recover the closed space of the base and open it for public use; recover this closed space and make it available as a possible and safe space to cry in public, problematizing the pedestal by reversing its metaphorical function,” he expressed in the interview.

The exhibition will be available until December 10.
