Biden announces plans to visit border with Mexico for first time

This visit, if it finally takes place, comes in the midst of a migration crisis.

United States President Joe Biden announced Wednesday to organize a visit to the American border with Mexico in what would be his first visit to the place since assuming the presidential term.

Biden, when asked by reporters if he would travel to the border during his trip next week to the North American Leaders’ Summit in Mexico City, said it was his “intention”. “We are working on the details now” he added.

This visit, if it finally takes place, comes amid a migration crisis that is “straining the system ”, as recognized by the Secretary of National Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, as reported by CNN.

“We operate in a system that is fundamentally broken. Nobody disagrees with that. It just seems like we can’t agree on a solution,” he said, referring to the ending of Title 42, a Trump-era border policy that allows the administration to deny migrants the ability to seek asylum for health reasons without individual assessment.

The United States Supreme Court determined in late December that Title 42 would remain in effect until the legal dispute in all states is over. Biden clarified that while this border policy is “overdue,” it must be enforced for now.
