Mont Blanc Tunnel will be closed for two months from Monday

The Mont Blanc Tunnel, one of the most important road connections between France and Italy, will remain closed for maintenance works for two months starting from Monday. According to the operating company, extensive work needs to be done in the 60-year-old tunnel. Floor slabs will be replaced in the central part of the building and the ventilation system will also be replaced. Traffic will start moving again as of December 18.

Construction work was originally planned to begin in September. However, the project was postponed after the landslide in the Fréjus Tunnel, another important connection between France and Italy.

Normally, 3,600 cars and 1,700 trucks pass through the Mont Blanc Tunnel, which is approximately 12 kilometers long, every day. In March 1999, 39 people died in a fire in the tunnel. However, it reopened three years later.
