Michelin presents special tires for electric cars

Michelin e-Primacy and Michelin Pilot Sport EV debuted in South America during the E Experience.

Experience E not only served as a platform for automotive brands to showcase their new products. Other players linked to mobility also exhibited products that contribute to the fight against global warming by moving closer to sustainable development.

Michelin was one of the companies present at the Espacio Riesco fair. The French brand announced for the first time in South America the most complete range of tires for electric vehicles in Chile, covering around 35 models, from the most diverse brands, present in the country between hybrid and 100% electric: tires Michelin and – Primacy and Michelin Pilot Sport EV.

The former is designed for electric, hybrid and low-consumption vehicles, while Michelin Pilot Sport EV is suitable for high-performance electric sports cars. In any case, the company indicates that all Michelin tires, regardless of the range, are compatible with electric vehicles. .

The new tires will be marketed in Chile between November and December this year, although the first versions have already been in stock since June.

“We complete a broad portfolio of dimensions for the different brands that offer vehicles with these characteristics,” says Carlos Spinazzola, product manager for the Michelin region.

Formula E experience

Michelin is an experienced player in issues aimed at reducing climate change, in fact, it has been exploring tire technologies for electric vehicles for some time in Formula E, the FIA World Championship of which it has been a partner since its first season in 2014 and until 2022.

The high-level electric competition served as a laboratory for development and technology transfer, particularly in the field of energy efficiency in order to offer the best tires for electric cars.

With all this accumulated experience, the Michelin e-Primacy and Michelin Pilot Sport EV tires were created. According to Carlos Spinazzola, electric vehicles demand much more from tires, firstly, because they are heavier vehicles (because of the batteries), and because of the high torque they deliver instantly, thus accelerating the rate of wear. at 20%.

These requirements are taken into account in development, which is why Michelin tires are designed to provide a longer lifespan without sacrificing key performances such as safety, regardless of the degree of tire wear.

Another need of electric and hybrid vehicles is to have greater battery life, and here tires are essential. In the case of Michelin products, they offer significant advantages due to their low rolling resistance, maximizing battery life up to 60 km of autonomy in the case of the Pilot Sport EV.

Another advantage is interior noise. Michelin contributes to more pleasant experiences by reducing it by up to 20%, thanks to Michelin Acoustic technology.

Regarding the brands that have joined Michelin, it was indicated that there are more than 280 approvals between 55 vehicle brands worldwide, equipping more than 50% of the brands that produce electric vehicles.

Some of the electric and hybrid vehicles originally equipped with their tires and which are already in Chile are the BYD Han (Pilot Sport EV), Gely Geometry C (Primacy 4), Hyundai Ioniq 5 (Primacy 4 & Pilot Sport EV). ), Hyundai Kona (Primacy 4), Hyundai Tucson (Primacy 4), Porsche Taycan (Pilot Sport 4), MG Marvel (Primacy 4), Citroën C5 Aircross (e Primacy), among others.
