After suffering a serious knee injury in a 3-1 qualifier against Georgia, young Spanish star Gavi could be ruled out for the rest of the season and therefore the European Football Championship in Germany. According to preliminary data, the 19-year-old technical specialist of FC Barcelona suffered a ruptured cruciate ligament in his right knee. This was reported by the Spanish sports newspaper “AS”. If the fears are confirmed, Gavi will have to expect a shutdown of six to eight months.

The midfielder was injured early in Sunday’s game in Valladolid after a collision with Georgian player Luka Lokhoshvili. After the game, national team coach Luis de la Fuente spoke about the “serious injury” and the “bitter victory of his life.”

Failure at the European Championships will be a serious blow for Spain

Gavi will now be studied in detail in Barcelona. The injury also shocked Gavi’s teammates. Ferran Torres picked up his teammate’s shirt after scoring to make the score 2–1.

The feared long-term loss would be a major blow to the European title contender. The technician, who was named the best young star of 2022, was one of the key players in the Spain team that secured victory in the group ahead of Scotland. Despite his young age, the game against Georgia was his 27th match for the national team, and at the moment he has scored 5 goals for the team. Gavi is also an integral part of the Barca team. He has played 12 of 13 matches for the La Liga champions this season. (dpa/ska)
