Young Spanish star Gavi is expected to miss the rest of the season, and therefore the European Championships in Germany, after suffering a serious knee injury in the 3-1 qualifier against Georgia.

The 19-year-old FC Barcelona technical specialist suffered a complete rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of his right knee and a lateral meniscus injury. The Catalan club announced this after an investigation. Gavi will undergo surgery in the coming days and is expected to be out of action for six to eight months.

The midfielder was injured early in the game in Valladolid after a collision with Georgian player Luka Lokhoshvili. After the game, national team coach Luis de la Fuente spoke about the “serious injury” and the “bitter victory of his life.”

Teammates are shocked

The injury also shocked Gavi’s teammates. Ferran Torres picked up his teammate’s shirt after scoring to make the score 2–1.

A long absence is a heavy blow for a contender for the European title. The technician, who was named the best young star of 2022, was one of the key players in the Spain team that secured victory in the group ahead of Scotland. Despite his young age, the game against Georgia was his 27th match for the national team, and at the moment he has scored 5 goals for the team. Gavi is also an integral part of the Barca team. He has played 12 of 13 matches for the La Liga champions this season. (dpa/ska)
