Lula’s foreign policy adviser, Celso Amorim, told the O Globo newspaper that the president would not go to Milei’s inauguration ceremony because “he was personally offended.”
Argentine President-elect Javier Milei has offended Brazilian leader Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the past and must call him to apologize before negotiations can be held between them, an adviser close to the Brazilian left-wing leader said Monday.

“He gratuitously offended President Lula,” Social Communication Minister Paulo Pimenta told the press. “It’s up to Milei, as president-elect, to call and apologize. After that, the possibility of continuing negotiations will be considered.”
Far-right libertarian Milei has repeatedly criticized Lula and called him a “rabid communist.” On Sunday, Lula conveyed his best wishes to Argentina’s newly elected government, but did not mention Milei.
“I wish good luck and success to the new government. Argentina is a great country and deserves all our respect,” the Brazilian president stressed on his account on the social network Twitter.
And even if Milei’s apology came, it seems like it wouldn’t be enough. Lula’s foreign policy adviser, Celso Amorim, told the O Globo newspaper that the president would not attend Milei’s inauguration ceremony because “ “He was personally offended.”
Consulted by the international agency AFP, the source at the Planalto Palace confirmed the absence of the Brazilian leader, without detailing his motivations.
