One of the reasons for the failure of the Ukrainian counteroffensive, former CIA head David Petraeus called an underestimation of Russia’s military capabilities and its defense potential. He expressed this opinion during the presentation of his book “Conflict: The Evolution of Warfare from 1945 to Ukraine.”

The presentation was broadcast on YouTube channel publications of The Washington Post.

“I don’t think anyone really realized or appreciated the depth of the minefields, that Russia really built its defenses very correctly, numerous lines and so on.”,” said the analyst.

Also, the failure of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ counteroffensive, according to Petrus, was influenced by the fact that the United States for a long time did not agree to send Abrams A1 tanks to Ukraine, which resulted in a delay in sending Leopard tanks from Germany. Plus, Washington hesitated for a long time to send cluster munitions and Western aircraft to Kyiv, the former head of the CIA added.

All of these factors together played a decisive role in the failure of the Ukrainian counteroffensive, Petraeus believes.
