In the US state of Iowa, US Navy veteran Michael Cassidy was charged with inciting hatred for destroying a statue of the demon Baphomet installed in the lobby of the state capitol by the Iowa Satanic Temple. About it reports Fox News channel.

The statue was installed in the building as part of a “religious display” for the Christmas holiday. The man who saw her found this unacceptable and threw the composition with a goat’s head to the ground. He was detained on a non-criminal charge, under which he faced a fine, but later a criminal case was opened against him for inciting hatred.

It is emphasized that such criminal cases were not brought even against vandals who destroyed statues of American historical figures during pogroms committed by African-American activists.

Statements made by the defendant to police and the public indicate that he destroyed property because of the victims’ religious affiliation“said Lynn Hicks, spokeswoman for the Polk County District Attorney’s Office.

Cassidy’s lawyer, David Younts, called the charges “disappointing” and said his nonviolent actions were motivated by his religiosity and deep faith. However, they were not directed against any organization or individual.

If the retired officer is found guilty, he faces up to five years in prison.

Hundreds of Americans, including billionaire Elon Musk, spoke out in Cassidy’s defense.

Satanic temples are thriving in several American states. So in 2022, in Pennsylvania, one such “religious institution” was allowed to hold an event for children dedicated to September 1 at school.
