An American soldier set himself on fire in front of the Israeli embassy in Washington and died as a result. The responsible police authority and a US Air Force spokesman confirmed this to the German Press Agency (dpa) on Monday.

The man was an active-duty Air Force member, a military spokesman said. He died from his injuries at night.

Police have already confirmed a rescue operation will take place on Sunday on the street where the embassy building is located in the US capital. The report said the man was taken to hospital by emergency services and is in critical condition. The fire department reported life-threatening injuries.

The video may provide information about the background to the self-immolation

The New York Times reported on a video posted on Twitch and then deleted in which a man said he no longer wanted to be complicit in “genocide” and had now resorted to an extreme form of protest. Setting himself on fire, he shouted: “Free Palestine!” “Free Palestine!” – they shouted, the newspaper reports.

Critics accuse Israel of committing genocide in its fight against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. South Africa filed a complaint with the International Court of Justice, accusing Israel of violating the Genocide Convention.

Israel strongly denies these accusations. The attacks are justified as self-defense following a terrorist attack carried out by Hamas and other extremists on October 7 last year, in which about 1,200 people were killed and about 250 kidnapped from Israel, according to Israeli data. (dpa/afp/tp)
